    Default fur seal sole detail

A male Antarctic Fur Seal decided to sleep right next to the landing site at Grytviken, South Georgia so I had to stand guard in case he decided we were competitors on the beach. He wasn't interested! This guard duty allowed me to make some images of the detail of the sole of the foot/flipper or these amazing marine mammals.

I cropped to frame the detail, dodged and burned a little, and sharpened.

Hope everyone is having a nice break over the holiday.

Hi John, firstly glad to see you got the right boxes check and the file has a tagged profile.

I like the idea of a 'detail' shot, and quite often something that is overlooked, but can be just as powerful. There is a blue hue to the flipper which having never seen anything like this before, so I can't really comment, but the look and feel almost has a human element to it, which I like. The textures and tramlines look almost unique to this seal, like a fingerprint?

Going back to a discussion on your previous posting with Artie, certainly adding a Tonal contrast in NIKs helps, plus a green channel B/W Channel overlay just to enhance the detail & depth, which also helps to reduce some of the more brighter/lighter areas on the flipper, without effecting the fur area. IMHO adding some more 'tonallity' into the subject creates more interest & depth. Do you have any more of the flipper curving off to the top? Personally I wonder if it needs more DOF, but perhaps jumping to say f/22 would in turn mean an even bigger jump in the ISO?

Great to see a different aspect of an animal we are getting to know in the last month with the various bods who have been to this location.

Hi John - Really interesting image. I thought it could easily be a primate but having seen your title knew it was a fur seal. Unfortunately you can see why they were coveted for their coats. I too see the bluish tint but am similarly not sure if it is natural. Nice detail too. Glad your guard duty allowed you to experiment.

    Rachel

    Thanks Steve and Rachel.

I think you might be right about the colour. Here I toned the blues down in channel B of L.A.B. Also applied a green channel overlay as suggested by Steve, at 50 opacity- full strength seemed too much. BTW way, try inverting the green channel!

Sharpened with Topaz Detail 3. Level of detail in the image required a 61% quality jpeg compression to come in under 250kb.

Hi John, a huge improvement, looks good from here too. Are you happy with the revise, has it moved in the right direction?
