Default Why it's called a red bellied woodpecker.

Photographed this morning at Elizabeth Morton NWR on Long Island. I was using this perch for the wee ones when this bird decided to give it a try. He was so heavy that he fell over and had to hang on tight. As shown, it's about 2/3 of my original capture...had to crop from the bottom to eliminate a tripod that was being used for the perch and added a smidge to the bottom. I usually don't like birds as large in the frame as this is, but this has almost a childish appeal to me. Thanks for your opinions!

Great shot of this Woodpecker. The pose is very cool and the HA is perfect. Exposure and detail look great also. Like the tight comp as it accentuates the detail and colors. Well done.

A stunner with a perfect head angle and tons of detail. Love that perch--color and texture. And those clinging feet. Lots more on the left for 3X2 might work very well.

    Wow Grace,
    You nailed this one!
I love how you placed the eye in the upper 1/3 of frame.
The HA is perfect as well.
A beautiful shot and I hope you were very lonesome without me...!!!

Wow, a beautiful looking bird and light and detail is excellent....glad it's filled the frame so well, I wonder if a slight touch with the burn tool would enhance the breast detail a tad more ?

Great perch, HA, & detail. It's the first time I have seen the red belly of a red bellied woodpecker because I always saw them on a tree trunk. TFS.

Excellent capture! Nice of him to show his belly. I, too, wonder if a little more space on the right would add to the image...

Quite simply, the best tight image of this species I've ever seen.
Surely hope this is considered for IOTW. Makes for a fine study of the plumage.
Also cool how you can see the head and tail working together to counterbalance
    the weight of the body.

Stunner of a portrait, Grace. Detail, IQ, and sharpness are all excellent, and I love that inquisitive look at you.

Hi Grace, I like this 'upside down' pose, together with the soft light. Exposure, detail both spot on, as is the sharpness. We have a great view of how the Woodpecker is holding on. Well captured.

Great shot Grace and Happy Holidays.
I'd like to see the crop Art suggested as it seems a little square but might be all you can do. Still a great shot and now we know why they call them red bellied, that the red headed woodpecker was already taken.

Such a great bird showing its belly which gave its name. I like the pose and the fun perch. Great work, Grace. I wish you Happy Holidays.

Terrific shot of the Red-belly, hanging on for dear life and with an expression to match his situation. Exposure, detail and perch are great. I might consider a bit of canvas to the right, or maybe even a tad right and left, to make it closer to 3:2. A Happy Holiday and productive New Year to you.

great pose, light details and the perch is goof too. I would personally go for a 3X2 with the bird slightly smaller in the frame

    Grace:

Lovely image, and a rather unique perch for a woodpecker! I am not bothered by the squarish crop because the perch and bird work the diagonal of the frame so well, but certainly could see a slightly looser crop working as well.

    Beautiful.

    Cheers
