Although the head seems sharp, I have a problem with the shadow cast by the wing, and complete lack of detail in the shaded area. The light, from the left, seems to be relatively harsh as well. To me the wings look out of focus, as in outside the DOF which F/8 might not have been be able to supply (depending on distance). It doesn't look like motion blur to me, though it very well be why the wings appear OOF. If motion blur this was your intent a lower shutter-speed would have been called for. However, for general BIF images of terns, I would suggest shooting around 1/2000 sec. my 2 cents~Bill

That beak really pops and draws you in. Interesting splash but I wish I knew what made it! I agree that the strong shadow confounds the image.

I can't remember exactly but I have a feeling the splash was a large fish it had dropped and subsequently recovered.

Nice action shot. The shadow and the wing position taint the shot a bit. Keep chasing them. I shoot allot of terns in flight and its all about catching them at the right angle. When you do you will see it. The frame will light up. Good luck.
