    Default Black Skimmer

Captured this in the summer at a local beach estuary. This spot is great for Skimmers and Terns in the summer, it has a great vantage point that is even or above the passing birds.
I think most photographers that capture BIF stuff lean towards a non blue sky shot.

Thanks as always for looking and for your input. Appreciated.

Lacking a little detail and sharpness in the on the face, but great eye contact, and the wing position is extra good. Interesting choice of composition with the vertical framing, not something I would of thought of, but it seems to work well. Background has some very nice color tones as well

Good wing position David and I like the eye contact but wonder if sharpening the eye, maybe with some local contrast, would make an improvement here.

    Hi David,
I really like the composition and the layered BG.
I like the look he is giving you- great eye contact. Exposure is perfect.
The bird seems to lack fine detail? Is it a big crop? Or maybe PP? It almost looks like you did some NR on the bird and I am sure you didn't.

Aside from the whites being a bit hot , this is a sweet image. Love the graduated BG.

I like the wing position and the BG. Agree on loss of details on the bird, wondering if you applied NR to the bird or if a large crop?? Great capture!

Very nice BIF pose, and the "non-blue" bg is a plus. I had the same thought about the lack of detail, not unlike the look of NR esp. on the far wing.

The detail issue has been addressed, but I like the vertical comp, I would maybe have more room below than above.

Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions.
After reading the comments about the NR look to the wing, I looked at the original My exposure was a bit on the dark side. Tricky bird to expose with lots of blacks and whites. Just tried bringing back the blacks again with similar results.
    No noise reduction was applied.

Interesting choice of crop...and one that I agree works. Beautiful BG and pose. Whites look hot in some spots, blacks look good.

David I like the image and the crop but I get the impression you are losing some detail. On looking at your full frame image I would suggest you take a 3:4 crop or is 4:3 - anyway the portrait version using the full height of the image.

The out-of-camera image looks good. Not sure why, but the final image looks a bit soft. I will suggest reprocessing without NR and some selective sharpening of the bird.

Nice BG and angle of the bird.
