A good capture from a canoe Jon. Love the Darter's alert pose here, with its neck stretched upward, as you drifted past. Easy to see why they are commonly called the snake-bird.
The different coloured layers in the BG make an interesting back-drop to this composition.
Fine detail and great look back pose make this for me. Your a brave soul in a canoe.![]()
Really cool looking bird...good exposure on this guy...great job from a canoe!
Beautiful capture, Jonathan. I love the feather detail on the back , the good HA and the serene bg
Great work Jonathan, love the layered BG and head turn. Good feather detail as well.
Hi Jon, great alert pose, and these guys really have fearsome bills. Well exposed on the darker plumage, and your low angle of capture from the canoe has worked out well. You couldnt have captured a more layered BG if you tried.
To create more of a vertical, I would come in a bit from the left.

great detail, and especially beautiful and natural colours!
A very elegant image.
Always a treat to come across this species, pose looks good as does the comp in the frame, liking the multi layered backdrop, although I find the head gets a little lost in the brighter green.
Canoe photography is something I'm just starting to delve into atm....it's not an easy task
Wonderful shot.
Just love the pose, excellent details, lovely background, and nice light.
Very well done.
Lovely image Jonathan - Super IQ and sharpness, and a very appealing b/g,
Cheers Greg
This guy has some fantastic neck. Such a great capture, Jonathan.
Jonathan:
Magnificent image of darter.
Love the pose with stretched neck and head turn, nice details on feathers, lights and beautiful multicolored BG.

Satish.
Thanks very much everyone for your comments. This was the first time I had taken images from a canoe (no camouflage) as you might expect it is very tricky at first. I found once I had spread my feet between the tripod legs everything became much steadier and when not taking images i put my hands on either side of the canoe. (I was lucky, I did not paddle, our taxi driver did that for me, my pals in the other canoe spent the first 5 min just going round in circles - laughed my hat off, the language was something else!!)
great capture of this unique bird. Love the detail in the blacks.awesome background too.great job on this 1
