    Default The Redpolls Have Arrived!!

    Attached Images Attached Images

They've been reported and photographed around town for a while, but they have finally showed up in my backyard. I woke up to about a hundred of these invading my feeders and trees (just a simple nyger seed tube feeder and a squirrel-proof sunflower seed feeder). These beautiful winter visitors from the arctic will hopefully hang around for the duration of the winter months. The perch is imported from my folks' cottage (I always have a selection handy for backyard setups), and the BG is the neighbour's semi-pressure treated fence.

Canon 7D + 100-400L @400mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/200s., f/6.3, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, a couple of larger distracting snowflakes cloned out, darkened pupil, a stuck seed patched off of the bill, about 85% FF.

You nailed it Daniel with excellent techs, BG, an interesting perch with the lichen in the URC that balances the image, & the falling snow takes it over the top. TFS.

Love the curious pose, the bird, the BKGR, and the soft light and mood. But especially the curious pose. Way to go!

The pose of the bird real nice. BG looks great and the snow flakes add a nice little touch. Good IQ. Love this one. TFS

Nice bird, pose and perch. The background is quite complementary. There are a few reported around here from time to time but I never seem to catch up to them. Nice job.

I like the winter look, I would try to sharpen the moss on the perch above the bird or move the bird up.

Moss above the bird cannot be sharpened that much -- its really out of the focal plane. What Daniel could do is a couple of stacked focus images next time to capture the perch in full focus.

That being said, this is an excellent pose for this bird. That quizzical look is great. I do like the perch as well.

Daniel - send some of these our way. We don't often get them west of the Cascades in Oregon, and they are scarce even east of here.

Hi Dan, love the winter feel to this, as the falling snow says it all. Excellent detail on the redpoll, sharp, and what a perfect pose you have captured. The lichen covered perch looks good too.

An exquisite composition Daniel - the winter scene, the beautiful Redpoll, the interesting perch and your groovy neighbours fence in the BG, and all this captured in your backyard..!!

I like that it's a male bird, and the falling snow is saaawheet.
Great looking perch too, reminds me of what I find in spruce bogs...
