I just picked up a 1Dx from the good folks (Gary Farber & John Duggan) at Hunt's, and decided to take it down to the Bosque for a quick torture test. I became quite familiar (and impressed) with Canon's new AF system in my 5D Mark III. The 1Dx shares the 5D3's AF underpinnings, but the similarities end there. The 1Dx has the fastest, most responsive, and accurate AF of any body I've ever used! With its more powerful battery, the 1Dx drives the AF of a big lens in a way that the 5D3 can only dream about. High ISO noise is also noticeably better than the 5D3's, with a much finer grain.
I held off on buying the 1Dx because of concerns about pixel density and price. But I got a chance to use it for the first time at my recent Bosque workshop and was very impressed! A couple of phone calls to Arash and Artie later, and I was the proud owner of this new body.
Here is a frame from yesterday shot not long after the sun went down. I played with a few sliders in LR, but did not alter the default sharpening and NR settings. After cropping I exported to PS where I cloned out a piece of another Crane's foot. Then I downsized to 1024 pixels and saved for web. Here is the result; I hope you like it.
Canon 1Dx, 600mm II, f/4, 1/1000, ISO 4000, manual exposure, hand held
