    Default Red-faced Warbler

    Hi all,

Here is my first post for critique. I took this a few months ago. It is one of my 'better' shots I think, and overall it turned out decently.

This is a Red-faced Warbler from Mt. Lemmon, AZ.

    Manual settings:
    f/9
    1/200s
    ISO 400
    Flash fired, manual

I cropped the image as well as adjusting the brightness and sharpening.

    Cheers,
    Adam

Hi Adam. Welcome to BPN! Nice composition and color on this image. Pretty good use of fill, too (maybe just a tad less). I really like the grad of the green in the background. The body and head angle here are nice, and I like that you can see the feet. The image does look a bit soft around the head, but just a tad bit.

Welcome to BPN Adam!! A beautiful bird, lovely colours to it. Looks like you had not much choice to use flash here as it looks like it was a heavily shaded area. It does have a bit of a flash look, but at the same time the image is still a tad dark. Beautifl BG, I love the darker wisps at left. OK perch, if a bit thick. Looking forward to more, and please do not be shy to critique others' works too...all part of the fun here at BPN!

Thanks for your critiques. It is unfortunately a bit soft around the face. As to the perch, I'm not sure that the branch being a bit thick is an issue in my opinion but to each his own. I'm new enough to all of this that if I can get a good shot of a bird in a good pose I'll take it! Even if the perch is not optimal.

Welcome to BPN Adam! Nice to get a Red-faced Warbler so clean. I spent an afternoon trying to photograph them this summer and never got anything this good! I agree with the others about the perch size and the flashed look. As you are aware the image is a little soft as presented. I would opt for less aperture and more shutter speed in low-light situations such as this. I'd also consider bumping the ISO a bit.
