    Default Antartic Fur Seal

    Attached Images Attached Images

Hi folks - photographed this seal on South Georgia Island.
Lying flat on the belly in the wet sand , awaiting high waves to come ashore and throwing penguins on the shore, difficult job , because you never know where they will be thrown on the beach.

So i took the chance to get some seal images, and what should i say , missed the penguins.

Like this image because of the low perspective and the really nice wave in the BG.

Image was slightly underexposed,so i am not sure about IQ from recovering the darker parts around the face.

    tell me your thoughts.

    Canon EOS 1D MK IV
    EF 500 IS L
    Tripod

    F 5,6 ; ISO 2500 ; 1/3200sec

Processed in RPP and PS ; cropped from RHS to 75 % of FF. Not more room on bottom , by knowing it is a bit tight .

    Cheers Andreas

Hi Andreas - great low pov and look back pose. I do think the IQ has suffered from the high ISO and the underexposure compared to your usual posts. I find the dark area of the wave and specular highlights in the bg slightly distracting. Still a nice image overall.

    Hi Andreas,
I like the composition and the look back pose. Also like the cool greenish-gray tone of the photo and the crashing wave in the BG. Seems like the seal is saying "Do I really have to go out in that?" There is a bit of noise visible in the fur but being wet and slick maybe it could take some more NR while still retaining some detail.

I like the myriad of grey/blue tones here Andreas. This could work well in monochrome since it's basically already almost a duotone.
Cute pose. IQ looks good for the ISO used, though I do see some noise in the shadows of the seal.
You mentioned the room at the bottom already...

Hi Andreas, nice look back pose and Steve C's comment really sums up the expression nicely. The overall tones & colour conveys the cold of the scene/location very well.

Perhaps not going for such a high SS may have helped the ISO/IQ so why so high? Providing you don't blow the whites or clip them, it's easier to darken an image in parts that lift the darker shadow areas and let noise creep in, but easier said than done at times.

Thanks guys for leaving comments, appreciated !!!!

Steve - good question about the SS, just ask the idiot who have chosen this, maybe he can tell you a fancy story about it. I tell you this guy is not even able to deal with this equipment, better go for point and shoot.

    Anyhow thanks again Andreas

Andreas I won't be allowing him to join me in the near future without reading the manual, I would then advise him to start with a polaroid so he can get the composition right, then work on SS & DOF. Perhaps Santa might drop him a book to read?

Technology can be a wonderful thing, especially with DVD tuitionals, at least if you fall asleep you don't lose your page and can go back quickly.
