    Default The Red Berry.

Alot of times I like the subtleties in images and here the single red fruit among a bountiful yield of yellow ones really caught my eye. I like the pose the waxwing gave me here, almost as if it new I wanted to take its' portrait...including the neatly slicked-back crown! Some may not like the branch behind the subject much, and in normal instances I wouldn't like it either, but I love the added yellow berries it provided for the BG.

Canon 7D + 100-400L @400mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/1600s., f/7.1, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, small crop from vertical original to help the comp, some dry leaves peeking into the frame in LLC cloned out, and the BG branch as been toned down some...especially the darker tones (combination of dodge tool and low opacity clone tool).

P.S. Finally heading out tomorrow after a few weeks so hopefully I'll have a new subject to share...but if not I still have a few waxwings up my sleeve...

    wonderful image, Dan.
I like the OOF berries in the background and the angle of the branch in background. I do wish the tail wasn't so hidden although you can make out the yellow tips.
    Nice one.

Wow Daniel, this is beautiful and I think its one of the best images of the series. Even though there isnt a berry in its mouth the pose and HA are awesome and I really like the OOF yellow berries in the BG. Tack sharp and very well exposed. Smokin shot!

hehehehe...agree about the one red berry, works nicely as does the whole setting, my only thoughy would be a slight....very slight shame there is a oof chunky branch running directly behind the head, Overall simply stunning ...loving it !

Love the overall feel of the image. The bird is beautifully illuminated. Pleasing detail in the eye. LIke the yellow in the BG , Adds so much to the image.

the thick branch going across in the BG is distracting IMO . Also, The smaller 2 twigs behind the in focus berries on the lower RH corner can be cloned out and that will really accentuate the beautiful bird and the berries.

The light looks to be a little later in the morning, any specific reason behind ISO 800?

Hey thanks guys! Amol, the reason for ISO 800 was to ensure enough SS to properly freeze the awesome (but quick) poses they gave such as this one:

    Daniel;

I am with you in regards to the branch behind the head. It is OOF enough that the patches of color come through, without too much distraction from the branch itself, works for me.

The birds pose is nice, sharp, well exposed.

Overall, a very effective image, the colors make it sing.

    Cheers

You have a great series going on with this bird species, Daniel. I wish I had at lest one of them with berries in my porfolio.

Yes he/she does appear to be posing for you Danial. Lovely sharp image of the waxwing, great perch, and I also like the OOF berries in the BG. The one red berry is neat and adds a little extra to the composition.

Beautiful image Daniel - there seem to be a lot of images of this species going around, but this is one of the better ones I have seen- well done, cheers Greg

Great picture. I had been nice with the BG a little more out of focus.

Nice light quality and harmony of colors between the subject and the background.
Pose is nice. Head angle is perfect. The lone orange/red berry is whimsical.
There is way too much color popping off everwhere for it not too overwhelm the subject,
which I think the berries are doing here overall, particularly the ones in the bg.
Also, not being able to see the feet well, and the full blown obstruction of the tail
does not work that well either imo.
