    Default Downey woodpecker on Birch

The superstorm Sandy knocked down a birch tree, so I've been using it as a perch in our yard. The peach color is piles of oak leaves and the teal is our pool cover. Not the most natural color, but I thought it looked nice. Bird attracted with suet.

Quite a large crop, the 5Dmk3 seems to hold up well.

Nice one Grace, Love the BG, the bird looks sharp and the IQ looks good.

Nice perch and good looking Downy. Pose is nice, showing the leg and the HA is right. I think the perch and the bird positioned very well in the frame. It is a plesing picture, Grace.

Natural or not, the BG is really nice.
It is all about the final result, the birch makes a very nice perch and the photo is very pleasing.

Have to agree the background colors are very nice, even if non natural. Splendid shot I think, in what I presume is a natural behavior/posture for Woodpeckers...can the bird take a bit more sharpeningor would that result in being too grainy ?

nice pose and details, like the light too, if it holds up I'd crop even more from the bottom.

Excellent light quality for the contrasty nature of this subject.
Perfect dof for the subject and perch...you obviously did a very nice job
setting up, distance wise, to get so much dof at f5.6 with this much focal
length. Subject pose and head angle are pleasing. The perch, it's character
and quality are superb. Comp feels awkward to me....it's subjective, but
what do you think of this? I think Arash was moving in this direction with his
    suggestion...

This is a very pretty image Grace. I love the colours, perch, soft light. The repost works but I'm OK with the smaller in the frame bird and I wonder how it would be if it was lower rather than higher within it.

Hi Grace, excellent exposure on this fellow, and love how the woodpecker is 'holding' onto the trunk. I do like the detail on the trunk, together with the colours of the BG, pool cover or not.

Your comp in your OP works just fine for me.

Grace, I am infact liking that teal color a lot :-) terrific details and what a pleasing BG. I am with Daniel...small in frame is fine but have the bird a bit lower. I would trade the grey at the bottom for more orange-brown at the top.
