Another image of the desert elephants in Damaraland, Namibia. This one of the matriarch of one of the herds and one of her youngsters on the move. Notice that the matriarch is collared so that they can track the herd's movements.

There's so much to like here, Rachel! The soft light worked a treat to bring out immense detail in the ellies (coupled with your workflow, of course), and the composition sits just right with me, with good depth from the BG but still good definition in the surroundings and background to give the scene lovely context.

Hi Rachel, I would concur with Morkel. In addition, I love the raised trunk and even the half tree on the RHS adds to the composition.

    Congrats.

Thanks very much Morkel and Steve, glad you like it. Steve, I agree, for me it's the raised trunk of the youngster and the way he has softly laid it on mom that adds that bit of something to the image.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

    Hi Rachel
i like the raised trunk as well , like wise the tones and contrast throughout the image.Best in the ellies themselves.

But different to the other boys , i would crop the RHS side to get rid of the centered ellies.
Not really important , but i would do it that way.

    Rachel,

I like the darker color and tones in the mom's left ear facing us. Certainly there is nice details in the elephants. At first I thought the baby ele was following way to close to mom, bumping into her rear end. Then after looking closer, it is evident the baby actually was walking next to mom, and laying it's trunk on her side. It looks as if your full frame image was taken at about 35-40 feet away? if so, the inclusion of the landscape is well placed. I was thinking though the colors of the landscape might be bumped up for some more vibrance, unless it would not represent the actual colors seen. I like the crop as it leaves the eles something to walk into. TFS.

Thanks Andreas and Grady. Grady - the colors on this are very accurate. Lots of sand coupled with the prevailing mist from the sea often creates muted colors here.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Fantastic image Rachel. Soft color tones, complementing habitat and background. Like it.

    Hi Rachel,

While I agree with the above, and would crop the right a little, the one thing that catches my eye that I don't like is the tree branches coming out of the little one's head. Probably should have used a faster aperture to blur the background more. Might try cropping out the sky (making it a pano format) and blurring the background.
