I caught this Coyote's gaze while it was out hunting and set up for a this shot predicting it would pop over the small hill. It was my lucky day, as it all fell into place.
This was photographed with a Canon 1D Mk 1V, 500 f/4 IS + 1.4 TC, ISO 200, f/7.1, 1/1000 sec. in AP mode and Evaluative metering. This was shot from a car on a beanbag + Skimmer Ground Pod.

Hi Jeff - A big welcome to the Wildlife Forum and a nice first image. I like the pov and the square-ish crop works well here. The eyes really grab me. A couple of suggestions for taking this image to the next level. First, it needs more selective sharpening on the coyote (the actions in the stickies at the top of the forum are very good for sharpening for web). I would also do a very slight levels adjustment selectively to the coyote, moving the midtone slider to the right about 8-10 points. Finally, another round of NR on the bg. A lot of this comes down to personal taste though. Looking forward to seeing more of your images.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Hi Jeff, not a lover of square crops, but this seems to work, nice one.

With the kit used and the techs, certainly you will have nailed the image. Therefore, with Rachel's suggestions it will move the image to the next level. Not knowing how advanced you are in your workflow & post processing, but the sticky will help you, however adjusting sharpening in Camera RAW (LR, ACR, DPP, C1 etc) will give you the best solution, plus you always need to sharpen after cropping with various amounts applied, but no where as much as you may apply in the first phase. Also each image will be different. I would also look to making selective adjustments on the eyes & nose.

Welcome Jeff. Some good suggestions by Steve and our new rockstar Rachel above . To me it just gives the impression that the coyote was not in proper focus to begin with? Perhaps a back/front focusing lens? How sharp is the coyote's eyes and nose when viewed 100% on the RAW file?

Nice when they pop up where you expect, isn't it. Like the BG color (mountains?), it compliments the coyote. A touch more sharpening would be okay for me as well but not too much and mostly just on the eye.

I'm not that advanced in processing, so I would take their word for it! I love the picture, but for me it would say more if both the ears were pointed to the front. The light in the eyes is fantastic.
    Kind regards,
