    Default Late Fall Loon-scape.

A couple of Common Loons spent a few days at a local beach area, the last place I thought I'd see one of these! I know they are found on the river during migration, but it was the first time I've seen one at this partucular spot. It was very cold out there, with ice forming in places. They were way too far for detailed photography, but with the sun rising and a nice backdrop of leafless trees a few "loonscapes" were in order. This one came out quite nice I think...and I'll share another tomorrow that I think would make a nice duo with this one.

Canon 7D + 100-400L @390mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/1000s., f/7.1, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, just about FF (slight rotation and cropped the corners off).

    Daniel:

I like it! The loons in Michigan are long gone, so nice to see one show up for you. I like the mist/fog, subdued/fall color pallet, hint of detail in the loon breast.

I might be tempted to try several different crops with a bit less above, but nice as posted.

    Cheers

Like it a lot, has a timeless feel. I like the silhouette and the low angle.

It's an attractive photo. Looks like it could be a post card.

    Hi Daniel,
    Nice to see something different.
It reminds me of an antique yellowed picture.
I like the in camera composition very much and the barren feeling of the upcoming winter.

This image has a great feel to it, as mentioned above. Great position of the loon in the frame. I could see a version with less room up top and a sliver more on the bottom. Great capture!

That's a stunning image, Daniel. I love the composition, soft background, and atmosphere you've created. Although I generally believe that silhouettes should be black, in this case the dark bird against the soft brown tones of the the rest of the image seems a bit jarring to me. I wonder what it would look like if the bird were not so dark and rendered a bit brownish.

Hi Dan, I like this lots. Love the sepia mood in this, together with the misty conditions. I also like that you have left lots of space/trees above the loon. An opportunity well used.

Very artistic shot. I like all of it and wouldn't change a thing. Like Peter said, looks like post card. Did you do something to the trees in the BG. They have a unique look to them. Nice Work.
