She walked right up out of the lake, right over to where I was sitting on the ground and then just stood there, waiting for her portrait to be taken.

Overcast skies - big storm clouds with bright sun peeking through.

(Gus, I'm calling her Gertie. Now you've got me naming my ducks!) :D

Proud of you Julie !!!! They all deserve to have names !!!! btw will look for princes and post !!!!

I like the tight crop Good point of focus For these close up images its a toss up whether to go for dof or not Stopping down will help but might not be so good for the bg !! Generally opt to stop down the try to get low to have the bg far away Great intense look and the sun did peak Strong shadow !!! Might have tried for a non peaking moment and raising the ISO !!!! I like the image a lot and very nice metting Gertie !!!

Hey Julie, what a great look on Gertie. Only thing is the shadow, otherwise excellent composition, very sharp, and in my opinion, I love the background.
    Congrats,

Thanks for the comments, guys. Al, I am going to keep the stopping down thing in mind. I could have gone down another stop or two but my lens is an f/4 and I've "heard" that you don't usually get your best focus at the lowest end so I've been bumping it up a notch or two. Is that not correct? I'll stop it all the way down next time and see what happens.

Julie, Congrats on your duck. Looks good I like the composition and the details... Would have been better under less harsh lighting condition, but hey I love it...:D

The f stop will not effect the focus. In fact, at least with the Canon, the lens will always focus at its largest aperture. Regardless of what the f stop is set at. So if you have a 2.8 lens and it is set to 5.6 or 11.0 it will still be at 2.8 while you focus. It will close down to what you have it set at, 5.6 or 11 when you push the shutter button. Now most lenses will be sharper a couple of stops closed down. Now we will go away from this when using L glass as they are designed to be pretty sharp for the full f stop range. That is one reason L glass costs more......:)
