This Short-eared Owl was making its "Barking Call" on this post in beautiful afternoon light. It was quite fun to watch.

1D4 600mm f4 with 1.4 ext at f.6 ISO 800 1/1250 tripod, manual exposure - basic raw editing from Lightroom only.

Lots of impact captured here Doug in that lovely soft, warm light. The wide-open mouth vocalizing is well recorded. The only suggestion I would make is for a little more canvas at top and right.
Are many of your owls in the US active during daylight hours Doug?

Great capture in beautiful light. Love the barking pose with the wide open mouth. Lots of detail in the face and it pops nicely against the great BG. Agree with John on the room on right and top. Nice work.

Thanks for the comments guys. Here's a re-post with more room on top and right. Do you like this better?

I suppose I have a tendency to try to get the bird as big as possible to show off detail.

John, we do have a few Owls the are Diurnal but most or nocturnal. The Short-eared Owls can be active in daylight especially a couple hours before sunset.

Nice perch and BG. I like the crop on the re-post. I like the mouth open position. I wish I could see the right eye a bit more, but works as presented.

Beautifull light and details. Like Nick, I wish I could see a bit more of the right eye but the facial expression is super. Well done.

Very nice shot, lots of color and contrast in this, prefer the repost. Loving the smooth complimentary backdrop and open beak, a slight shame the far eye is not more visible, but still a striking shot

This is a great image! I like the colors, pose, sharpness and detail. The open mouth makes this special. TFS

Repost is alot better crop-wise...the comp has room to breath. Excellent pose, and I like the rich light and colour tones you got here. Not the best perch in the worls, but heck I would have been all over that opportunity too!

Terrific. Great light and wonderful barking pose. Repost helps. It seems to me that if you had more of the right eye you would have lost some of the barking beak head-on, so I'd be thrilled with this one just as is.

    Hi Doug,
You must have been pretty close even with the 600mm to get such great detail. I usually like my images a bit tight but I too would vote to open the space up to the right and down even a bit more. The post actually looks pretty clean compared to the ones we have up here. This bird's markings look a bit dark. Must be a female.

Thanks for all the comments. It is greatly appreciated.

Steve, this was taking just a short ferry ride from you at the 72nd Street entrance to Boundary Bay. This was in the electrical fenced area just a 100 yards West of the parking area. I was close. The exif data says 17.5 meters.
