Hi Peter - gorgeous lion and the square comp works well. I like the slight tilt of the head too. I also like the tone you chose for the conversion. Some of the whites seem a little hot/bright particularly along the left side of the face as we view it and the chin there and some of the blacks seem a bit choked. Let's see if others agree.

    TFS,
    Rachel

    Hey Peter,
First thing I noticed was what Rachel mentioned on the bright on the left side but as I like high contrast conversions, it works for me although it would be nice to see a comparison with it toned down a touch. I like my B&W's to have from white.....to inky black....so I am ok with the darker areas as well. Personal preference there. Overall, a very nice comp and conversion.

Hi Peter, a very arresting image, although I do get a feeling of deja vu? Although viewing on the laptop, the colour toning looks spot on, offering a nice warmth to the shot echoing the location/time of day.

    BTW, got your monitor yet?

    Hi Peter,
besides the fact i do not call square crops my favorites, like wise B/W images, think you made a good job on conversion !
I like the overall tonality as presented !

Would like to see the color version or a B/W without the toning.

    TFS Andreas

Thank you everybody for your valued input...

Rachel , agree with Roman , with my images I love to print with a tonal range from pure white to deep black. The whites on his chin is from chalk based water hole with sunlight falling upon it , depending on your monitor and calibration the degree of hotness/whiteness will vary. Printing this there is detail in the whites.

Thanks Roman , I agree with your sentiments..

Steve, I am looking at Eizo Box now, delivered last nite, will be unpacked tomorrow ,when I will be able to give it my full attention.. the suspense is killing me..

Andreas, I always shake my head with bewilderment when people talk about square crops and nature images converted in B&W as if they are taboo... one should never limits ones creativity ...anyway a topic for a different forum.

    thanks again for comments!!

Thanks Peter - you can shake your head as much as you like, i take the freedom to have my opinion about square crops in general , not only in nature photography .

nice pose, details and toning Peter...
if I'm not mistaken you had posted this one some time ago? or was it a different frame of the same lion?

Square, B&W, same lion or not, take a bow Peter! Love this image for all of the reasons you light think of. And I see lots of details in the whites to blacks.
