    Default Leopard & Elephant

The elephant showed up at a waterhole in Etosha. The leopard was at that time in it's "cave" under some rocks snoozing I assume. After a little while the leopard came out to have a look what is going on in it's waterhole. I assumed that the leopard would go on the opposite side of the waterhole. But no it went straight to the elephant in the water. Placed itself down for a loooong drink. It took the elephant about 10min to figure out that the leopard is behind him! To much enjoying the wet, I assume

    70-200 L II & 1.4x 235mm
    f/7.1 1/3200
    ISO 640 ( should have been 400! )

Had to take a bit brightness off the legs in the sun.
Done Levels, curves, selective color, unsharp mask,
cropped about 20% from the too. Was to much empty space for me. As well a bit from the right and left.

Will be gone this weekend, but looking forward how I can improve this image.

Hi Anette, an interesting image with regard to the content.

I think a CCW rotation would be good, likewise adjusting the colour balance, looks like there is more blue coming through overall. light looks harsh and tough to handle, but the highlights aren't too bad. If you have the space, then more room to the right, with a little less to the left. Could add a bit more sharpening to the Leopard. Agree with you about the ISO, but we all can make small errors, LOL. Wish you had used the MKIV, not the MKIII for this shot.

    Hi Steve,

the light was harsh, it was at 2:20pm sadly. I have enough space around to shift the crop. Will redo it next week with the color balance, hope to get that one sorted out
Digging already in this matter around.
The highlight, this is the last image in this series with the leopard and elephant with the MKIII. All following done with the MKIV
I will put my MKIII on the market after Christmas and get me a new camera. Maybe your beloved 1Dx if I can find one for a few peanuts
Santa Claus won't drop it on my door step, I assume Will keep looking.
    Many thanks for your help.
    Have a great weekend

    Ciao

Anette - a fantastic sighting and great comp. Really shows the blissful ignorance of the ele about the approaching leopard. Seems these types if sightings/encounters always occur when the light is either too harsh or non-existant. I would try a luminosity mask to tone some of the highlights and agree with Steve on reducing the very strong blues (might need to reduce cyans a tad too) and additional selective sharpening on the leopard. Looking forward to seeing a repost once you have time to rework.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Thank you very much Steve & Rachel,

    Here my redo.
Had quite a struggle with the blue color cast. Pulled out all books and tried all sorts of technic, at the end I just did it in Camera Raw!
I did the crop a bit wider to the right of the elephant. How is it now.
Oh, and sharpened the leopard a bit more. Somehow I get the feeling the leopard should be a bit more warm.
I did not use any warmth, vibrance or saturation on this one. Nada color thing, except get rid of the blue.

    Ciao
    Anette

Hi Annette, great job following the suggestions as the repost took it up a notch. Great behavior and interaction.....not very often seen!

what a moment! pity about the time of day, but wildlife don't listen to our whims about decent light
the colour in the repost looks much better!
I'd still rotate it slightly CW?
