Canon EOS-1D Mark II N, 11/1/2012 109:13 AM, Aperture-Priority, 1/125, Av 5.6, Evaluative Metering, Exposure Compensation -1/3, ISO 400, Lens EF300mm f/2.8L IS USM, RAW, Flash Off, White Balance Mode Auto, AI Servo AF. This is a slight 10% crop, it makes a 11x14 print. I felt the color version gave him more character. The reds really make this portrait for me. B&W just made it bland and uninteresting.
This is another image from The Owery Park Zoo's primate exhibit. We waited for about 1 hour for him to pose just right for us. With so many people that come and stand for just a few seconds, then saunter off, thinking they have viewed the animal, it can be difficult for the animals to calm down enough and relax. We waited for a inique pose, I think we got it here in this image. I wanted for the eyes to say something to the camera, for some emotion to convey some feeling of communication. To me this one says "rescue me, please, before some kid comes back"!
The pen had ropes, ladders and clothes that junked up the scene to much. So this platform was the only viable spot to image him on. The crop was from the left side. I left the wooden platform in to help give him an anchor for the laying down or resting feel. I also left the small piece of straw on his coat, it goes with the zoo invironment. I suppose I could have cloned it out...but I left it. Let me know what you all think.
Hi Grady, a very 'soul' searching expression, excellent.
I can only agree with the observations made above, but have you considered darkening the BKG, so it just frames (arches) over the body? I think it helps draw the viewer in more and focuses attention. You are prodiucing some really nice stuff, thanks for allowing us to share in them.
cheers

Hi Grad, just revisited the thread and opened the image up in PS. I think, if you have the time and with some simple channel layer adjustments/tonal adjustments, plus the above comments too, then the image really takes a big step forward have just tried some tweaks and the image really comes even more to life and illustrates even more what you have captured. Apologies if this sounds 'gushing', but it's a really nice image.

OK, taking the OP and BKG this was where my additional thinking was going in relation to the subject, keeping or changing the BKG is personal preference.
