    Default The Gluttonous Bohemian Waxwing.

I was so thrilled when a huge flock of Bohemian Waxwings (mixed with a few Cedar Waxwings) came down to eye level to feast on ripe berries. I was even more thrilled when I saw this image on the back of my camera's LCD!! Small crop for comp and basic adjustements (Levels, saturation, etc...) but basically out of camera...not even a twig to remove.

Canon 7D + 100-400L @400mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/1250s., f/7.1, ISO 800 (histogram checked), natural light, handheld.

    Daniel:

Good timing, nice framing, complimentary BG colors, all good. Nicely exposed as well.

A treat for us, as well as the bird

    Cheers

Hi Dan, you certainly pressed the shutter at the right moment to have the berrie balanced in the mouth. The berries do compliment the waxwing, as does the BG.

Absolutely beautiful. Love the color (Colour in your case ) palette, and such a sweet subject. Two tiny tweaks that I might consider would be to remove the tiny random nub at the top of the frame (above the bird's mouth) and lighten the shadowed branch coming into the frame from the bottom. Your work continues to get better and better!

Terrific image, Daniel. Love the pose on the bird and the berry in the beak. Light is great, trees & BG. All the colors look so great together.

Agree with all the above, a well timed shot, great light and the bird picked the perfect spot to feed, well done by being there at the right time.

Wouldn't change anyhing here other than possibly removing that tiny bud at the very top.

    Gorgeous frame!

Beautiful image, beautiful bird, and gorgeous light. I can't think of anything to improve. I'm curious if this were a serendipitous capture, or if you set up with a blind, audio, or any other techniques you might have employed. Thanks for showing us how it's done!

Thanks Dennis! What was serendipidous was that they chose this very tree just as I arrived next to it, and the placement of the berry in the mouth...I have a couple more where the berry is held at bill-tip. These guys just descend from the heavens like hundreds of angels and invade fruit trees like there is no tomorrow! This particular tree had 30 to 40 individuals gorging themselves on it (and a few other neighbouring trees likewise)...the trick was to wait for some to perch in little openings or near the edges. With so many birds in one tree it is just a matter of time for one to do so.

It doesn't get much better than this right out of camera Daniel. Alan Murphy would be proud of this one!

Great shot Daniel! Nice capture of the feeding behaviour! Also, the photo keeps the birders happy with all the field marks shown in the photo.
