My good mate Gerrie who lives near the Pilanesberg National Park, and who lent me his 500mm for the morning, calls this fellow 'Scruffy'. He is a molting Red Bishop bird. He perched quite close to us and ended up swinging in the wind on the tiny piece of grass he perched on. I have toned down the blade of grass as best I could to keep the natural colour. The BG is OOF grasses.

Great sharpness and feather detail Stuart, and I see you already toned down the grass. I'd maybe place the bird lower in the frame and use the brush in PS set to a low opacity to paint over the darker area at the top. The BG is very sweet. Only a shame the golden colour isn't more evenly spread towards the bottom.

If per chance you should have the same opportunity again, I would stick a 1.4x on the 500mm for a tighter crop.

    Nice work Stuart

That is one scruffy looking bird, Stuart!
Sharp as can be, a very strange looking bird, nice to see.

I love these character shots, this ones a cracker Stuart, loving his poor little forlorn face, super detail and such a smooth backdrop....my only thought was the darker smudging at the top of the frame mars it a little...easy fix.

What a crack up! Scruffy is right. Looks like he just got out of a clothes dryer. Super sharp and exposed well. Probably an awesome looking bird once he is fully molted. Looks like you had fun with the 500. Nice stuff and I like the fun shots.

Hi Stuart - strange looking but with excellent detail and sharpness. Looks like you made good use of the borrowed lens. I do wish the grass perch didn't go completely across the image. It is probably just me, but I thought it was a string until I read your description.

    TFS,
    Rachel
