Since a major winter finch invasion is well underway, here's a recent image of a White-winged Crossbill feeding on the ground in Salisbury, Massachusetts.

Way to go going low. Nice warm light, and the cone is a nice addition. Sharp details! These guys can be quite tame too eh! (340mm ). I only wish it would have turn to a more profile pose to see the tail, but I would certainly be very happy with this.

Terrific low POV. Love the warm light, the way you've shown his signature bill and cone, and the great detail.

beutiful low angle shot, Ryan. The cone beside the bird is a nice touch.

    Ryan:

The low angle, presence of the cone so close, warm colors, all excellent. A sliver more DOF would be nice, but hard to come by in that close.

I might try a version with slightly cooler WB to see if that works well. It is almost too golden for my taste.

    Cheers

Hi Ryan, good IQ in this, and just love the light and warm colours. Great view of the crossbill, sharp, and the DOF between FG and BG works well. Shows off the bird nicely.

Nice ground-level photo of a bird normally found 30+ feet up a tree. Nice warm tone.

Low comp is great as is the fine detail, having the pine cone in the shot makes it extra special, and the beak showing where it gets it name from is well portrayed. Personal opinion....but I find the color tones too warm/orange, somewhat unnatural and would suggest altering it slightly

I'm in awe! A crossbill on the ground! I've only seen this species for the first time this year and they're always so high up in the pines...nice look at a lovely bird! Wonderful light, great details. Nice pinecone!
