This Gentoo Penguin was photographed late in the day coming out of the surf at Gold Harbor, South Georgia with the Canon 300mm f/2.8L IS lens and the unfortunately discontinued EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 800. Evaluative metering +2/3 stop off the water with no waves: 1/1250 sec. at f/2.8 in Manual mode.

This was an extremely challenging situation as the birds were coming in riding the waves and even surfing--the question was where would the next one be????

To learn of my not such a great decision earlier that day see "If You Snooze..." There are lots of great images there but none of them are mine!

Don't be shy; all comments welcome.

Terrific photo, and very nice timing. Nice SS, freezing the water and a very nice look at the penguin.
    Immensely jealous of your trip!

Love the water action, the head angle, and the slight mouth opening. Head is tack sharp. I love the soft FG and low angle. TFS

Great capture Artie! Great foreground and background. The penguin is nicely positioned in the frame. I really love the DOF in this shot giving a 3-dimensional look! Nice work!

Nice shot. The water splashing and the pose make for a nice scene. Exposed well and full of detail. Like the comp too.

Stunning 3D look and cold feel. I also like the subject position, frozen water droplets and good head and eye detail, cool shot Artie.

This is just great, the splash, HA and low pov all combine perfectly with your usual excellent techs.

    This is very nice.
I like the curtain of water and the HA. Adds a nice line to the image.

Hi Artie, good low angle, and love the exiting pose. The orange of the bill and fins pop nicely from the water BG, and that splash looks great.

This image has a very three-dimensional look to it. Love the glimpse the penguin seems to be giving you. The foot gliding and and big splash of water are very neat!

P.S. In case you have not noticed the next thread you start will be number 1000 for you!!!
