    Default Pine Grosbeak.

It had been a while since my last outing, but this weekend did not disappoint! Pine Grosbeaks and waxwings (both species) were on the menu. They like cluttered settings, but once in a while an individual cooperates by moving to the outer edges of the fruit trees for a cleaner view. I would tentatively age this one as a young male...the adult males are red (I did not see any), and the females paler plus grayer on the belly.

Canon 7D + 100-400L @400mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/500s., f/6.3, ISO 400 (histogram cheked), natural light, handheld, an OOF twig running across the frame behind the subject (chest high) cloned/patched out, and another OOF twig cloned out in LLC. I do wish the shadow on the tail was not there, but I'll take it as is.

You could not have done any better. Love the parallel lines and the fruit. Good luck with a male! Delayed in Houston....

Great photo! I like the messy fruit on his beak and the nice details in the yellow feathers.

Great look at this species in the glutton mode.
Just a bit more DOF to get a sharp tail?
    Well done.

Great perch and BG, good detail. I like the capture with the fruit in his mouth at this head angle. Not bothered by the tail.

Nice capture! The bird is very sharp and detailed! I don't really care about the OOF tail or the shadow.

Hi Dan, love the pose of the grosbeak, especially that he leanes parallel to the adjoining twig. Good light, and I like the detail and colours on him. The feeding behaviour adds to the image.

Excellent light quality and a very pleasant background achieved.
Nice job getting a "clean" comp. Not easy in this scenario...

Nice shot. Exposure and detail are great. Smooth BG and good HA . Food in the mouth makes this a interesting scene. Well done.

Love it Daniel. It's terrific the way the bird's angle echos the vertical branch. It looks like the bird used the crotch of the branch to stash part of the fruit. Great techs and I know it's not easy to find such a nice background. I might consider removing the two, small twigs above the main perch to the left of the bird.

Great pose with a perfect head angle. Love the perch with the partially eaten fruit. I'd probably remove the OOF twig on the left side of the perch.
