    Default Red Fox

Took this a few weeks ago. The Fox was hunting mice/vole and actually caught one but its back was to me while hunting/eating. It sniffed and listened around this tree stump but came up with nothing.

Hi Tim - interesting view of the fox through the stump. I know it is not always easy to move in the field but this would have been over the top if you could have moved to the right so that there was complete separation between the fox's head and the stump. The rear of the fox looks sharper than the head/front. I'm not sure if that is a function of pp or where the AF point was but you might consider backing off on the sharpening of the rear/tail and applying a little more selectively to the head area. Finally, I am viewing this on a monitor that admittedly is overdue for recalibration and the whites of the chest/chin have a slight cast but let's see what others say about the colors. Overall, very nicely done and I look forward to seeing more of your images.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Excellent comp and nice techs Tim. Agree with Rachel on separation between fox's head and stump.

Like the colors of the fox and the green across the bottom and behind. Also like the fingers of the old stump and how they spread across the frame. I also kind of like the partially obscured face, gives a feel of him watching you rather than the other way around. A touch more sharpening from the chest to the ears would work okay for me though I'd be careful around the eyes as the catchlight is pretty prominent. A nice shot regardless and a good, woodsy feel.

Hi Tim, like the setting and nice to see a different subject. I think you did really well with the kit and high ISO, nice work.

Personally I might have preferred if you had been a fraction more to the right so the head wasn't clipped by the stump and was separated, but hey, that's in an ideal world, however you have him looking to camera so that a nice touch. I might also suggest cropping a little off the RHS so you loose the lighter part in the bottom RH corner and although it does truncate that part of the stump, it just contains the whole image a little better IMHO. I would agree on a little more selective USM on the face and I'm not sure if there is some NR on the shoulder/body (?) between the head and the RH stump.

Overall a very nice image Tim, look forward to more.

Great critiques everyone. Very much appreciated. I forgot to mention that this is full frame, AI servo and center focus point, so the tree stump got all the attention. I only fired off three rounds at this guy before it moved on. I checked the RAW file and it also has the soft patch in the shoulder. If the ISO wasn't so high and my DOF was greater and there was more light then I might have picked it up (my set up is not known for its fine detail) Thanks again and I will give this one a second PP with the inclusion of your tips and suggestions.

Hey Tim, don't beat yourself up on the techs, they are good, always better to have a higher SS than DOF, at least you stand a chance to getting something.

Look forward to seeing the repost.

    cheers

I think the result is great given the techs and kit you were using. You see, it's about the monkey handling the tools .
I like the setting and soft light here very much...and I actually like the placement of face/stump here, adds something of the nature of the fox for me. Rich colours work well too.
    Let's see some more, Tim...

Great points Morkel and Steve. I've always gone by my moto or "you can only get what the subject gives you". Thanks again.

    Hi Tim,
interesting view of the fox , in good composition.
Like the colors and well balanced tones in the image.

Minor thing is a better separation as rachel pointed out.

    all over a nice one.

    Hi Tim,

beautiful image. I agree with moving a bit to the right to get the fox full head. Yep not easy I know. I like it very much the way it is.
    Ciao
