Default Snowy Egret from last year.

I haven't had much time for photography lately, but I was going thru some old shots and found this one that I had overlooked.

Hello Eric , Beautiful photo of a beautiful bird ! Only nit here for me is the amount of in focus dock/ pier and the bright green piling /post .It steals my eye from the Snowy ! I would desaturate and or crop the distraction ,of course all suggestions are opinions, the grain of salt is up to you . Love the Bg !

    Eric,

You took a great picture why complicate things with the excess stuff at the bottom of the frame - crop out the busy wood work below the perch. love the picture and the f/8 and muted background are great - keep the frame simple and remove the distracting wood-work that pull the eye off the subject. I really like this picture and a bit of rework will make it much stronger - please adjust the crop and post again.

I originally did crop it closer, but thought that the wider shot added perspective. The closer crop also lacks detail (the wider crop is, itself, cropped pretty heavily). Here's the closer crop.

I also saved a copy that was minimally cropped just to give it an 11 x 14 ratio, which I also like.

Eric, I think the tighter crop works better. Nice shot of the egret.

I have to agree with Jeanean, the tighter crop is better. I see a couple of issues with the wider crop. The green post is still a distraction and I think that the egret really gets lost with all of the open space to its right.

Thanks for all the comments. In the end, I've decided to go with a slightly tighter crop than the original, but still leave some of the post in (I like the texture and the bolt running thru it). I did, however, de-saturate the post a little, which makes it less distracting (thanx for the tip, Clyde). The tightest crop seems a bit sterile, and the resolution, for an 11x14 print, would only be 98dpi. The final crop gives me 130 dpi, which itself is marginal.
