This was taken recently and was the closest frame I got before he took off. I can crop the image some more and still retain image quality, but I like the goldenrod under the perch, but think maybe the subject gets lost. C&C very much appreciated.

I'd go with a vertical crop on this Cathy. The goldenrod just under the kingfisher is the most dense, so this will be a nice base for a crop. Depending on what you feel works with the image quality, this shouldn't be too much of a crop. (cropping isn't my strong suit, so this is just an idea for you to play with. I also did a slight curves adjustment for contrast.)

    Cathy,

The hard to photo Kingfisher,.. what a great subject but as mentioned the composition is the opportunity here, too much negative space. Jeannean's repost is close to where you need to be. One of my favorite techniques for composition or subject placement is to take a piece of paper and place over the screen and find the best way to present the image, then post.

The OP has too much going on in the frame remember to think composition that is an art and I struggle with it every day. You control what is included and exclude in the picture and in this case more should be excluded. Keep at it and keep em coming to your credit I have never posted a Kingfisher you have me beat in this regard.
