Default Polar bear sow with COY

We have had exquisite light and activity these past four days. In all honesty this has been one of the most productive polar bear shoots I have ever hosted. We have been truly blessed. Off to Churchill tomorrow, followed by 3 additional days on the buggies. Can't wait!

See you where there is light, or at the computer,

    Chas

That is how I like to see depth of field in a wildlife photo. NOT the typical shallow DOF, giving sharp subject with foreground and back ground blurred to hardly recognizable. F9 with 170 mm lens worked great here.

Tom, surely you can't mean that EVERY wildlife photo HAS to look like this?? How boring would photography be! (not saying the photo is 'boring' - quite the contrary - but if everything was the same or according to your particular taste, Tom, then it would be boring!)
In a scene like this where the BG is complimentary to the scene yes, or if the intention of the photographer is to show the context and environment (and you know I like to do that), but having shot in the South Africa bush you must know that often the BG is just a nuisance...

Lovely image indeed, but what is a COY?

Agree with Morkel re DOF. In this instance it is entirely wonderful to have sharpness through the environment because it is so clean, both in compositional elements and in tonal range. But seriously, in Africa apart from places like Etosha, the Mara/Serengeti savannahs and wide open places like that, it is often less desirable to have a sharpness through all the image. But to each his own, I like the DOF to suit the subject and environment.

Chas - great scene and walking poses with your usual high IQ and perfect techs. The look up from the cub is priceless.

CoY = cub of the year. Grizzly cubs can spend up to 3 years with their mothers. I assume it is the same with polar bear cubs.

Chas. Great image. I really like the 3D effect that your DoF gives. Excellent exposure. I also really like the composition & the cub's head turned toward the camera. TFS.

I love that BG. Great exposure and detail. Would have been a bonus if the adult was looking as well, but she's probably not interested and the curiosity got the better of the little one. Fine job.

This bg is a major contributor, at least in this photo. Kid seems interested, mom looks bored, much like us as we walk with our kids (sometimes). Just to witness this stroll would be awesome.
