    Default Silver-throated Tanager

This tanager was occasionally seen in the cluttered branches eating fruit but never in the open on my recent trip to Costa Rica. After several of these not so great encounters he landed on this branch at the top of a shrub for a few seconds before flying away.

Nikon D800 in DX mode, 500mm f4 lens
ISO 800, f4, 1/400 sec, fill flash and better beamer, it was a dark and rainy day
    Manual exposure
    Cropped top to 8x10

Really interesting comp, Laurie, with the perch angling away.
    Are they really this bright?
You got really nice DOF on the bird, sharp from head to tail.

    Dan,

They are that bright. My field guide describes them as bright golden-yellow. I was surprised by the dof but he was 7.5 meters away and is a small bird.

    Laurie

Stunning image. The thumbnail drew me right in and I absolutely love the colors and details.

To take it a notch higher, I would clean up the small highlights throughout the bg, most of which are on the bottom third of the image.

Question abou the fill: did you use it in TTL and adjust with negative exp comp in the flash? If so, do you ming sharing? Thanks!

    Miguel,

Flash was in TTL mode and I usually use between -2 and -3 but don't have the exact compensation used. Thanks for pointing out the spots - it was raining so I should have looked for and deleted them.

Laurie great capture getting him out in the open. Beautifully sharp and that's great depth of field for f4! Almost a spittin' image of our Golden Tanager except for the collar.

Hi Laurie - this bright little fellow really pops. He was very obliging landing on this interesting perch and givine you a lovely head-turn before flying off. I guess the light spots in the lower BG are rain-drops.

Sweet image, Laurie. Sharp and full of interest. I prefer to not do much cloning, but with rain drops I think you have to either have a lot of them for them to be part of your story or they need to go as they just look like flaws.

    This is lovely Laurie.
I would just get rid of raindrops in the bottom of the frame to make this a 10 out of 10.
    Excellent use of fill flash.
Great comp and perch as well.
Ticks all the boxes for me,
    Gail

Hi Laurie, striking yellows on the little guy, good DOF and sharp. I do like the placement and overall comp - just enough space left around the top of the leaves, and agree to 'wipe' away the rain drops.

Great looking bird, well photographed. The top of the head looks a little hot.

    Karl,

The original and large processed photos have lots of detail in the top of head and the histogram is good so I think it is just this small web copy that looks a little hot.

    Eagle Eyes,

Thank you all for finding the water drops. I have removed them from my copy. And thanks for all of the comments.

Great image Laurie! I like the look back pose, sharpness, flash and perch. These Tanagers are really bright and you captured it perfectly.

Hi Laurie: Great capture--I love it. Did you get this image in the first week of our trip or on your extension? Gary

    Gary,

I took this photo at Savegre, our last stop in week two. We added lots more hummers and lots more rain. Still a fantastic trip.

I can't wait to see more of your images. Greg put together such a great trip. Glad to hear your extension was productive too. I'll start posting some of my images this weekend (I hope). I've also been looking at Bob's images on NatureScapes--really nice stuff by both of you. Take care.
