    Default Penguin-Scape

    Attached Images Attached Images

This in-camera Art Vivid HDR image of a group of King Penguins roosting by a stream was created at Ample Bay Colony, Salisbury Plain, South Georgia with the tripod-mounted Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS EF USM AF lens and the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital Camera. Central sensor/AI Servo Rear Focus AF and recompose.

When even the remotest possibility of doing some serious land-scape or bird-scape work with a short lens exists, I make sure to have a Wimberley P-5 Camera Body plate and my Giottos MH 1302-655 Ballhead in my vest. It takes less than two minutes to mount the plate on the camera body, spin off the Mongoose M3.6, and replace it with the tiny ballhead.

The trip was both wonderful and physically demanding. Do see a larger version of this image in my first blog post on the trip: Rat Eradication Auction.

Don't be shy; all comments welcome.

Art, Nice image! Good use of the stream as a leading line along with the groups of penguins as an interesting middle ground. Finally nice use of the layered mountains with just enough of the sky showing. I also like the fact that the viewer can make out some detail in the cloudy sky. Minor point is I do see a few dust bunnies...If their birds...strike that...

I love this shot Artie! Great composition, colours and mood, showing me a place I'd love to visit one day.
Dave's made some good observations too. Ditto the dust bunnies

    looking forward to some more

(PS: Am I correct in assuming you used the in-camera HDR function of the 5Dmk3?)

Thanks both. I will check for the dust bunnies before printing. Mork, yes, that's what is says :).

Oh okay, so "Art Vivid" is an in-camera option and not a new "BAA trademark theme"?

Art VIvid is one of five HDR style choices. I love it. Natural is good to. The others are quite limited IMHO.

Hi Artie - I really like the depth to this image. Lots of interesting areas/subjects- the penguins, the stream as a leading line, the glaciers, the mountains, the plants. Looks like the in camera HDR is a good tool to experiment with.

    TFS,
    Rachel

ps: smoothed out the sky with Image/Blur/Surface Blur and changed the Hue of the Blue to get out some Magenta. All for the final print that went for $750 in the Rat Eradication Auction.
