    I like the pose of the horse here Steve, but have the feeling that if you would have been more to the right it would have come out better.
    About your post processing remark 'an overlay duplication with a gaussian blur to alleviate some of the washed out look from the harsh light'... very interesting, but does this not affect sharpness?

    You take what you can get with these guys. On this preserve, it's difficult to get shots that don't have busy and distracting backgrounds full of chollas and junipers. I almost always mask and blur the background to help it disappear more, while still providing a sense of the setting. You caught a nice pose and the light doesn't look harsh at all. Did you manage to get a shot of the dust bath?

    I didn't catch the dust bath David but the dust cloud from him getting up is what caught my eye. I like to retain environmental elements in my pics but think the proximity of the one behind him and the resulting sharpness may be a bit too much.
