Lovely photo with great perch. Very nice composition and colors. Maybe a more pronounced catch light.

Great pose, perch, and details Bill. Catching these guys sitting still is often a challenge and you did well here.

Hi Bill, I knew this wouldnt dissapoint me when I opened it - lots to look at. Cool leaning forward pose, sharp, and overall well exposed too. I like that your DOF covers the full image, and I reallylike the colours in the BG - compliments the foliage on the perch nicely.

One of your best images IMHO.

    Bill:

Very nice indeed. Love the color palette of BG, some cool, some warm, colors in leaves, pose.

To my eye, I would very lightly tone down the lichen and bottom of perch to look less flashed. but a subtle tweak to a very well composed image.

    Cheers

This is splendid, Bill. That background is to die for, and the pose and comp and those colors are exquisite together. Great job on your fill flash too, the belly is nicely lit.

Beautiful shot Bill I like it very much. I would personally back off with the flash a bit, my first impression was great shot, second impression was flash used - maybe it would be less apparent if you lowered the brightness a little bit. The perch and bird are very reflective I would suggest flash at -1.6.

I agree with Jonathan about his flash remarks.

A nice bird and good flash work. I am not a big fan of the perch, don't get wrong, it has a lot of character and lichen makes it special but is too thick for this little bird. IMO, I would get a smaller one if knowing that a smaller bird is going to use it.

Hi Bill - that is one beautiful composition of the Nuthatch. Love the pose and colours here, the lichen covered perch and sweet BG. You are fortunate with some attractive birds that visit you garden - my avian visitors are generally English black birds and sparrows..!!

I love the design, the colors, the perch, and the pose. It does look just a tad overflashed to me. (But it's far better than any nuthatch images in my files).

Flat out, maybe the best nuthatch photo I have seen.
Beautiful color and nice to get one on a small perch.

That perch rocks. Love it's complexities. Perfectly sized for the subject imo.
Love the pinkish/red tones in the background (fall foliage?), and would like to have
seen that color/tone dominate the background. Not that I mind the suggestion of sky...
but that bit of darker bit in the upper right hand corner is a little disruptive. Agree that
the flash is just a touch strong. Regardless, it's a great image of a great bird.
    DOF set perfectly too.

Thank you all for the kind comments. I agree about the flash. A shaft of late afternoon sun had lit up the fall-foliage dogwood branch in the bg, but the light was getting dim on the shaded perch, so I thought I needed some extra boost. I overdid it, and probably -1.7 would have been better, especially since I wasn't that far from the subject. I've been experimenting, but still have a lot to learn about flash. Here's a repost with a reduction of about 15 points of brightness on just the perch. I appreciate the suggestions.

Very nice image. I like the pose detail and the nice perch. The repost looks even better! These birds are constantly moving and it is not easy to take such a nice photo of them. TFS
