Nice comp, Jim. The perch divides the image into two halves w/ the upper half being darker and the lower lighter. Also the bird in the upper somewhat divides that half into areas of light and dark - dark to the right, light to the left. Maybe I'm making too much of that, but I like that kind of stuff. Anyway, bird's sharp and well exposed. Looks like the colors are good as well, though it's been a while since I calibrated my monitor. And maybe it is my monitor but the dark area in the lower right ... is it breaking up?

    Jim:

Your finch is very nice, well exposed, sharp where it has to be, I like the perch a lot, and its color keeps the attention on the bird, but there is enough detail there to reward a perusal.

    Cheers

Thanks for the comments Gareth. I tried everything to prevent the BG from looking blotchy but wasn't able to achieve that result. I ran NR and tried surface blur but the image retained this look.

Very nice portrait. I like the thorny perch too, although I'm wondering if the thorns should be oriented the other way....
Background could benefit from some selective NR.....a little noise from iso1250...easily corrected.

    Great perch and BG color.
The bird looks perfect, I think another round of NR on the Bg would look nice although
if you ran blur maybe there is not much you can do.

A lovely sharp image of this attractive finch Jim. It's portrayed very nicely against the dark, soft BG and the thorny perch provides additional interest.

Nice and sharp. Well composed, and I too like the dark BG. Too bad it is so noisy / blotchy though.

Hi Jim, diagonal perches through images always work well, and you have captured a gem of a pose. Sharp where it counts, and the finch pops nicely from the darker BG.
