I took this in the dense rainforest of Lamington national Park in Australia. I liked the subdued colors. Can anyone Id this bird?

Bob- Nothing to offer on the ID, but I wanted to say that I really like this image. Great colors and subject clarity-the background has a painterly feel to it. It also appears fill flash was used? (catch light and a properly exposed fg/bg ratio) Only technical critique would be the use of F8 in this situation.-Personally I would've opted for a faster shutter and even more bg blur by opening up a bit, say to F4-5.6 unless you were SS limited by flash output. Processing might be a touch dark-1/3-1/2 a stop, but that's subject to monitor settings. Cropping- I think I'd bring it in tighter to the subject (not a lot) by using a different aspect ratio. Overall, this is a wonderful image!

Bob, I'm going to guess it's a Lemon-bellied flycatcher. I don't know their species that well, but it looks like many of our flycatchers here. I too think the background has a painterly look to it...and I like it.

Hi Bob, I did some research on this and came to the same conclusion on the ID but a real Aussie would be the best source of info. I like the composition and think it works nicely even though the perch is quite large for the bird. Nature doesn't always provide the perfect setting so we capture what is in front of us. In this case, the large perch illustrates the small size of the bird. Nice job!

Beautiful image Bob--love the composition and the colors despite the large perch.

    Bob,

Love the feel and calming mood created by your camera and a great lesson in the importance of a complementary background. The opportunity here is to play with the crop on the left-edge use a piece of paper over the screen and see what you think. On balance, really like this one - great moment in nature and love the colors.
