I spent Wednesday at Fort DeSoto; the morning wasa OK and the afternoon rocked; we could do nothing wrong...

This Brown Pelican was photographed with the Canon 500mm f/4L IS lens with the 1.4X II TC and the EOS-1D MIII on a Mongoose M3.5/Gitxo 3530 LSV. ISO 500. Evaluative Metering +1 stop: 1/2500 sec. at f/7.1

Awesome silhouette! I like the lighted edeges of the wings and the color of the back ground.

What makes this image for me is the light seeping through the primaries and tail feathers. I was also thinking a bit more room below, but without changing the thickness of the dark band below. That sky colour is perfect!

    Hi Artie,

    Love the silhouette! How awesome!

What makes it appealing for me is the light coming through the feathers.

But if I look at it from a Maestro’s point of view (yours Artie) the little chunk missing on the fourth feather on the bottom and the two white specks on the top wing’s second feather could be cloned just to give that even feather-feel to it?

Excellent timing and great diving pose. Really like the light peeking through edge of wings.

Beautiful graceful pose. My eye thinks a bit off the right might balance the tightness at the bottom?? (Only my idea, Comp is so personal)

WOW ! I realy like the edge of light in the wings ! For the dark edge at bottom , I was not sure at first sight but now it works good and give a perspective that the pelican is close to plunge in the sea !

    Keep shooting !

    Dom :)

Love the backlight and BG. The silouette is nice but I would prefer to have both wings on a more symetric position. The head and neck are fantastic and, instead of the fact that there is not details on the bird face you almost can see the intention of this pelican with its "AF Module" lock on a fish! The light seeping between the feathers is one of the most I like here, in fact I suggest to rework thosse areas to increase the colour. I am not sure about the comp. The bird and the fast action are both facing towards the bottom of the frame and there is very little room but the wide spread wings are favoured by a landscape composition. Difficult question to choose a comp here.
