    Default Kalahari Giraffescape

This one jumped out at me while working through my images from a trip to the Kgalagadi last year this time. I just booked a quick-fire spur-of-the-moment return trip for later this month, as this place still captivates me...

    Techs:
    Nikon D7000 with Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 VR-II
    f8.0 @ 1/8000 SS (don't ask ) @ ISO-1600
I was shooting on manual with auto ISO and for some reason had the SS of 1/8000 dialed in for some action earlier on...

This is pretty much full frame, slightly cropped for better compositional balance...

While I appreciate what you were going for here, Morkel, I don't love the image. I do like it however. I like the wide presentation and the large cloud works well. I think I would crop some from the left b/c I personally feel the strong shadows in that area are weakening the image.

Hi Morkel - a very nice animalscape and we don't often get to see a lone giraffe wandering into the scene. An added plus of nice blue skies and puffy white clouds enhance the scene. Just take a look at the tops of the trees against the blue sky, they're starting to get a slight glow around them.

    Rachel

    Thanks Marina and Rachel.

Marina - I hear you about the shadows, but I wanted the giraffe and tree next to it on the ROT line. Will revisit for a crop up to the first shrub on the LHS...

Rachel - I am allergic to halos and am not seeing it , so perhaps time to re-calibrate...

I love the compositional balance and story here. I wonder if those shadows could just be lightened a little?

I enjoy it very much as a Landscape photo, I think as a wildlife photo, the Giraffe is kind of lost.
The sky, clouds and scenery are very attractive.

I like this one Morkel. The trees and their shadows, the grass with the clumps of green, the nice clouds, and the giraffe coming down the hill all work nicely for me. I do agree with Marina that some could be taken off the left side (as viewed), maybe to just outside the bush on the horizon.

    Hi Morkel,

I like this very much. I would lighten up the shadows of the trees a bit, especially all the way to the right nearly on top of the hill and the lower one,my thought. For me they are a bit distracting. Just my thought, everyone has a different taste of course. But wonder if it would look than a bit more complimenting for the Giraffe and around.

    Ciao

Hi Morkel, I think I'm leaning towards Marina's comment that sadly, as it doesn't quite grab me, and I have seen it longer than perhaps others. I'm not sure whether it's the scale, just the once giraffe, but I get the impression it could almost be a diorama. Cropping slightly, or RoT's I am not sure if this would make it stronger, sorry. However, saying that, it great to hear the location still gives you the buzz and I'm sure if any of us visited the location we would also have the same feeling and similar thoughts in capturing what you have. Perhaps it's one of those experiences where you need to be there to appreciate the moment? The unusual cloud does give the image a uniqueness though.

Sorry I can add much more to the post Morkel.
