    Default Banking Ring-billed Gull.

From last week, a quiet day and awful sun/wind direction for flight...except for banking images! A group of gulls floating way out into the river at my right were coming in to roost on the beach next to me (still to my right). Very strong winds from right to left made them make banking u-turns just in front of me to then land against the wind but off angle from me. I decided to practice vertical original frames, I was quite pleased with some of the results. This one about full-frame equivalent, with some canvas added top and right, then cropped left and bottom to help the comp. I got some in plain blue sky by I like the tree here...

Canon 7D + 100-400L @365mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, natural light, handheld, 1/5000s., f/6.3, ISO 800, comp tweaked as per above description.

Excellent pose and sharpness, with nicely controlled but bleeding edge whites. Shooting vertical flight is surprisingly challenging IMO, and I'm not entirely sure why; maybe it's because the bird is typically moving side-to-side across the viewfinder and you've got very little room to spare. You've got to be extra good to keep the bird in the frame. Also the camera doesn't feel the same in my hands when shooting vertical flight.

    Daniel:

Good comments from Doug. I almost always prefer some BG detail in flying images, even just clouds, to give some sense of depth. Very nice banking pose, sharp.
I will have to work on some vertical in flight poses, but I suspect the yield will be low enough that the trade off of a bigger crop will be worth it to stay horizontal most of the time.

    Well done.

    Cheers

This is quite amazing, that you take it as a vertical.
As far as the picture goes, the Gull has an nice banking pose, love the full strech of wings and the fanned tail. Exposure is spot on.
    Great work, Daniel.
Vertical BIF shot is something I should try one day.

A great capture for a vertical flight image Daniel. Good lighting on the gull, sharp and well exposed. I agree including the tree in the BG adds to this composition.

Very nice 3d look to this, exposed perfectly.
Really nice work getting FF vertical, It shows in the IQ.

Pretty dang sweet. Nice strong diagonal line created by the flight pose fits the vertical composition perfectly.
The plumage is in excellent condition, and I personally find this to be an attractive species.

I have also tried shooting vertical's and it's very challenging. I think the shoot worked out very well, excellent banking pose with fanned tail. Good exposure on the whites and sharpness, good work Daniel.

Thanks guys, and yes it was very challenging photographiung in vertical for BIFs! Lots of clipped wings and just plain 'ol muffed images...

I am with Randy about the sense of deph. I really like wing position here and the addition of green on back. The whites on belly are very close to burnt but you are brave by trying this in vertical, I have tried it and I know is not easy at all! Good job.

Great work to capture this as FF vertical. The inclusion of the tree makes the image, along with the nicely fanned tail in banking pose.
