    Default Red-bellied Woodpecker

    Attached Images Attached Images

Taken this past April at Viera Wetlands, FL. My first (and so far only) visit there was something else. This was the first time I'd seen a red-bellied woodpecker, and it did not disappoint!

    Shooting info:
    Nikon D300 | 500mm f/4 VR + 1.4x
    700mm | 1/2000" | f/6.3 | ISO 640

Critiques, comments, and any suggestions are welcomed and appreciated!

Miguel...great composition of beautiful bird. We have a similar specie here in Chile, but with not so vivid colors.
    Love the light background

Nice shot of a male. I like his head looking back.

    Miguel:

I like the looking away from the tree pose, prop tail, nice head angle and overall comp.

I could see a 15-20% crop off the bottom.

The red looks just a little oversaturated, based on the ones I have seen.

    Cheers

Nice capture. I agree it could use a little crop along the bottom.

Thanks for the comments. I'll take a look at a version with less room at the bottom.

Randy - I agree about the over saturated colors. Just took a look at the original and noticed quite a big difference. And as I don't have much experience with these guys, I'll take your word for it. Thanks for pointing it out.

Great looking wood pecker photo, the look away allowed you to have less trunk, which is a big plus.
I also think some off the bottom would look nice.

a nice composition Miguel of this woodpecker - the turned head looking back always appeals to me. The BG (sky) is a bit bright for me and may improve image if toned down a little.

I like the comp Miguel, maybe slighty tighter as suggested. Turned head is different and works nicely but also feel the BG sky is a bit washed out and would tone it down slightly. Cool shot.

Nice look back pose and good detail. One more for a little more off the bottom and toning down the sky some. Congrats on a first, nice job.

Great picture, Miguel. I had my best image of this species (male and female) at the same place in February this year.

I like the pose and the tree trunk, the backwards glance and the eye detail are excellent. I too thought perhaps the reds are a little over saturated (though I have never seen one of these birds). I don't know if you tried it but when you are in the raw converter depress the Alt key at the same time as you adjust the various sliders and you will soon detect any saturation/exposure issues.

Nice pose and perch with good details. Agree on a tighter crop and the reds being a little hot on the bird.

I like the pose, perch and expressive look of the RBWP. I would try to clone out the green OOF line along the perch from the bottom to the tail. Good crop suggestions above. Nice image Miguel.

I am not familiar with this bird so I donīt know about the reds, but pose and overall sharpness is fine with me. I am with Randy about cropping a bit on bottom. TFS.

The pose is great, and your shooting angle gives some really nice clearance between the woodpecker
and the tree trunk. The tail being used as a prop shows nicely in this image. The reds are definitely
over-saturated. I'm guessing the bird was at a nest cavity?
