    Good afternoon:

I am brand new to photography and welcome any and all feedback so I can improve! This is a picture of a Spoonbill that I took at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm yesterday. Any suggestions to improve the shot?

    Thank You!!!

Hi and wellcome to BPN, I am sure that you will find here a lot of advise about how to get better images:)
Your image can benefit of improvements with some PS work. I strongly encourage you to use RAW and to post the technical details of your image in order to help other members to evaluate it and made suggestion for the improvement. This image is underexposed and, if you use the RAW format you can recover a lot of details from the underxposed areas and can correct several stops of under or overexposing. The composition is afected by the out of focus vertical branch of the left. The angle is not the best but I like the backlighting on the pink feathers and that apoen wings.
I suggest to rework the image using levels adjustments and to add some saturation to pop up the pink plumage of the spoonie.
Here is a processing to show you what I am talking about. I worked with a very small jpeg file and the noise and degradation of the image appears quickly but if you work on a large file (best if is a RAW file) you will obtain better results than mine.
    Thank for posting :)

Great save Juan !!!!!!!!!! Might get the prize for best transformation of the year !!!!!!!!

    Big Welcome to BPN !!!!!!

When posting do let us see the tech info It will help evaluated what you did and better suggestions can be given. The most striking point in this image has to be the exposure Juan was able to bring it to life but is best to have the proper exposure. When making the image lighter you introduce digital noise. Can see as little dots of different colors in darker areas

One other point I can see is light direction The light was coming from the back of the bird and top Makes difficult to evenly illuminate the body Should try for having the light behind you W like to say point your shadow to the bird.

When you can please send me your name so I can do the update, Thanks

    Thank you Very Much!

Around 2 years ago, my wife and I, along with our 2 children, relocated to Florida. We moved from NY and were trying to find a nicer, warmer and friendlier place to live and raise a family. As a result of this move, I've gotten so excited about all of the birds, trees, and other natural things that are all around me. I've since tried to pick up photography as a hobby and couldn't be more excited to get feedback from folks like yourself, to improve my shots. Again, many thanks for the feedback!!!

    Chris welcome! Neat pose.

Looking at your techs I think I would have drooped the ISO some and slowed you shutter down quite a bit too, would have exposed the bird a bit better I think.
