Default Golden-Fronted Woodpecker - WildBird Contest

This Golden-fronted Woodpecker was photographed at Cozad Ranch in Texas. This set up may not have been as sophisticated as Alan's but it worked out quite well considering what we had to work with. This image recently won 2nd place in the Backyard contest of WildBird magazine this year and was featured in their final print issue. What a shame to lose such a great publication!

Very neat! Artistically I'm not a fan of the orange, but in the context of backyard birding it is perfect! Nice perch, beautiful BG. Personally I would reduce the reflection on the eye, especially on the pupil.

    Congrats on the award!

The Orange does seem out of place, but the woodpecker's position is great, the comp and IQ
are terrific and I can see why this is a winner.
    Congratulations.

    MARINA:

The curved, textured perch is great, the woodpecker is great both technically and his great grip on the perch.

Agree about the orange half; but obviously perfect for the market!

    Cheers

Hi Marina, I like your comp, and there's lot of detail to look at. The woodpecker is nice and sharp, and love the curved perch.

    Congrats on your achievement.

The IQ is stunning in this image.
I like the perch and the eye as well. Did you do anything to the eye?
    Perfect backyard bird shot,

Love all the lines in this, the perfect sharpness, the wonderful background. Neat seeing how it uses its tail to help prop it. Just a super portrait of this backyard bird doing its thing, perfect for the contest. Congrats!!! You are really racking up the honors this year.

I really like the overall comp here it is balanced so nicely with the curve of the perch and the angle of the bird completed and joined by the shape of the orange.. Really nice. The pulf from the orange adds even more. Congratulations on this win as well.
