    Default Snowy Owl

I posted very few Snowy Owl images from last year's irruption, but I got quite a few good frames. This image was one of my favorites. Getting the eyes wide open and symmetrical is key to a good Snowy Owl shot IMO, with few exceptions. Once the sun comes out, it gets progressively harder to accomplish that goal.

    Doug:

The lighting was really soft (dark?) and those eyes are great. Nice subject isolation, with just a hint of texture in the grasses.

    Sharp.

I could see playing with minor crops up from the bottom to reduce the impact of the perch a bit. I like the slightly off center placement of the bird.

    Cheers

Hi Doug, good eye contact from those lovely yellow eyes, and overall the snowy is sharp and well exposed. I like the perch, so Im fine with your comp.

Hi Doug! This shot is lovely. I don't agree with your point RE the symmetry and wide-openness of eyes, but I do think this shot is very nice. The bird looks great and I like the perch also...

Wonderful portrait, Doug. I like this a lot. There seems to be something plaintive in his eyes, which adds a lot to the image for me. Great comp.

I also see the plaintive look, maybe getting homesick?
    The perch is great!

Both the owl and perch have a lot of character. Love all the details in the feathers, esp on the face. Sure wish I could have made it out to shoot with you guys. I hope we don't have to wait too long for the next irruption.

Cool image....love the expressive look on the owl's face and the wet, slightly bedgraggled looking plumage is distinctive.
I also enjoy the subtle background variations, particularly in the lower part of the frame...
