Another image from my awesome up close and personal encounter with a large adolescent Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae). I think the whale was attempting to flirt with our boat. He came up spy hopping on three separate occasions almost an arm reach from the boat and I wish I brought my polarizer to help remove the reflection of the boat. Yep those little red spots are our reflections.

During this close up encounter I was surprised to discover that Humpies have whiskers????. I did some research on the net and found out that the bumps found on the head are called tubercles, and each one contains a single hair follicle, which may be used in a sensory capacity, much like a cat's whiskers.

Read more about the encounter in my previous BPN post: http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...fic-Whale-Tale \

Processing wise, I had to apply straightening to balance the image in PS and balanced the exposure using layers before applying tonal adjustments to balance the brightness and contrast.
Let me know what you think

Hi Jamie, it's certainly different compared to regular postings on here.

Can comment on colour/detail as I'm up North, but I think a portrait format might have been better. Perhaps in straightening the image you have lost some image area, as it's a little tight for me, and the watermark might be better running down the side of the image, as I find it a little distracting so close to the actual subject. Just a thought, but what about combining the water as a B/W and keeping the subject as colour, might be nothing, but?

Jamie - It does feel like you can reach out and touch him. Excellent clarity and I like that you can see the whiskers. I understand what Steve is saying about it being a little tight but I'm not sure it would evoke the same feeling with more room around. Nice timing of the shot too, not always easy to do on a moving boat.

    Rachel

    Thanks Steve and Rachel

I reduced the amount of straightening so I could maintain as much of the original frame as possible and applied some additional sharpening and highlight/shadow adjustments. I like your suggestion about the B&W background Steve but it's maybe a little too abstract for my liking. But hey, it was definitely worth suggesting.

The image is a little tight, though for me it has one feature that really draws me in.

Your subject is not obvious, too me anyway, and I was questioning whether it is a whale or a floating cactus.
