Very nice photo, Randall. I like the motion blur; it gives the image a great sense of action. I think I might sharpen the car a bit more.

Hi Christopher, thanks for the review. This was shot at 1/250, ISO 400 with a polarizing filter (can't recall the F stop used). Keeper rates on close up action shots like this approach those of BIF for me. Variables such as the bumpy track, driver input and a sliding car can wipe details into a blur.

That said- Proper sharpening is something I continually struggle with. This image was captured and processed early this year so it reflective of that stage in my development. It prints quite nicely at moderate enlargements (10x15-12x18 from the TIFF), so I'm wondering if the softness is due to the fact I didn't sharpen the Jpeg once I downsized it for the web (not being defensive, just trying to understand). I'll locate the TIFF and try posting it again from that source.

That could very well be, Randall. I always give my JPGs a quick round of high pass sharpening after sizing them for web. This link describes how to do that: http://www.ronbigelow.com/articles/sharpen3/sharpen3.htm.

Thank you for the link- I will read that and give it a go. To this point I've only used the USM method, usually .3P around 75% +/- when I do sharpen for the web. Much appreciated.

Size: 249.9 KB Might have overcooked the USM setting a bit as there are some halos, but I think that's all it is. Looks more like the original for clarity. Thx!

Great action there. Love that slinging mud and the sense of motion.
