    Default Pacing the shore

This elk had been staying in the woods sharpening his antlers while his cows headed for the river until he decided to join the them - perhaps to stop them from crossing. He walked back and forth in the water and on this island and persuaded the cows to say on his side of the river all the time persuading all of the photographers to run up and down the steep bank of the river to get their shots and avoid his charges. Of course by then we were between him and the ladies. He was always backlit or sidelit late in the day but we always try for any water shot. I'm sorry I cut the tops of the trees off but there was always to many things to think about and I missed zooming back. I like this photo because of the lighting and the parallel view of his antlers.

    Looks like a painting.
The DOF is really nice and that is a BIG elk!
Outstanding photo, frame it and hang it.

I agree with the above on IQ. And he is huge, at least a 7 by which are not common. You pointed out my only comment (tops of trees). If it really bothers you or others, try more of a pano and see how you like it. His head back like that is also a dominance display which will add interest to elk aficionados.

Hi Laurie - this is very nice. I like the inclusion of the water in the fg and don't mind the missing tops of the trees at all. I agree with the others - the IQ on this looks very good as do the colors. A small point and another thing to add to the list of too many things to think about in the field, it would have taken this image over the top if the head didn't intersect with the small brighter tree in the bg. Still an image I would be really happy to have and to hang on the wall.

Hi Laurie, I can only agree with the others.

As I'm away I can't really comment on the colour, however, for me the colours work hand in hand with this scene and overall this is a gorgeous scene. Perhaps shooting without the extender would have been better, but it's easy to come at this stage, so I wouldn't lose any sleep over the clipping of the tree tops and hopefully there is always next time. I like the way you have used the environment to layer the picture giving depth and insight to the location. Great pose. Having a low POV and the inclusion of the water and the 'pebble shore line' illustrates a good eye & vision for this composition. My only observation/comment would be, just try to darken and balance the water in the FG, perhaps keeping this darker gives a good platform for this image to sit on?

This is gorgeous, Laurie. Great IQ, colours look spot on to me, and the bugling pose is great. I like the layering from water to pebbles to beach to trees to more trees. The only thing in my mind that would've improved this is if you zoomed out just a fraction to include the treetops of the nearest treeline.

Great use of the lighting angle too.

    Overall - print and hang

Love everything about this one. It has a great feel, good IQ, painterly colors. Another version would have been one with the treetops, but this one works quite well without. It's nice to see the movement in the elk and the calling pose.
