It seems that tree swallows are popular in this area of the thread.. happily I can follow suit.. I took this shot yesterday of a tree swallow sitting on the end of a dock very near my home.
I cropped in slightly.. no other alterations except the usual general ones for color (slight boost), contrast (usm and curves) and sharpness...
    canon 1 d MkIII
    500 F4 w 1.4 tc
    handheld
    iso 1250
    f7.1
    1/1600
    -.33 ev

what was I thinking? well... nothing I guess.. I should have knocked down the iso.. this bird just sat there for a long time.. I could have boosted DOF.. dont know if I needed that though... its funny how you look back at the stats of the shot and wonder.. "what was I thinking?"
I like the head position.. and being able to see the back of the bird.. I think the pulley is interesting.. and I like the bg color.. still... I dont feel great about the shot.... maybe Im just too jaded.. but I doubt thats the case.. Im guessing its just not that great.... but I look forward to your (honest) thoughts... and really they dont have to be gentle (of course if you just tell me I suck.. Ill just laugh and add you to the list of those who are not really trying to help).. anyway Ive been shooting 300-500 shots a day lately.. I really need to be more focused and critical....
    thanks in advance

I'm always my own worst critique. I like the colors on this one and especially the over the shoulder look that you're getting. I did a quick crop to make it into a vertical....and added a little canvas at the top. See what you think. When you have the opportunity to photograph the same bird you might try different compositions.

I must just be lazy.. always thinking horizontal.. I can see myself stretched out in a hammock between 2 palms on a beach on the carribean.. ahhhhhhhhh.. that must be it.. dont you think? either that or I have some sort of vertical disorder.. perhaps Im vertically challenged? lol.. anyway.. thanks for pointing out what is probably the best alternative....

    Ken,

I like this shot, the vert may be the way to go. I think what holds it back slightly is one of the things out of your control with the tail and wing lining up so well with the pullie the contrast of bird and perch is not as defined.

Its a little noisy with that ISO so some slight Noise reduction may help, and maybe a slight round of sharpening on the bird to really add to the punch.

I like the vertical orientation better as well. It really sets off the bird and that stare down! Great BG and wonderful colors!

A very nice shot Kenn I really like what Lana did with it by getting rid of the negative space...

I like Lana's crop, Kenn, and think the orangish bg nicely complements the beautiful blue on the bird. Looks like the head/eye area could be a little sharper, like your point of focus was a little lower, but who am I to criticize sharpness; I struggle with it all the time and feel lucky just to avoid blur!
