One of my backyard birds. It's tough to get the HA just right on these guys; better eye contact and you lose the red spot, and vice versa. I think this one is about right. Probably should have gone with f/7.1 for a little more DOF on the left. I also tried a version with a tighter crop, but liked this one better. C&C always appreciated.

Well done set up. You achieved a great pose from the woodpecker. The perch has some interesting
character and is nearly as much fun to look at the subject itself. I like the loose presentation too.
Flashwork is impreceptible...
Interesting perch and good setup. I might do a little more sharpening on the head and back. And/or a little tonal contrast/detail extraction on the whites if you have nik plugins.
Very interesting pose, looks like the bird is part of the perch but stand out. Agree that the perch is also interesting but doesn't take away attention from the subject. I might take just a little bit off the top. Very well done.
Yep, that is a nice pose, and that perch is very beautiful. Good BG too. The blacks on the right shoulder seem quite dark, I'm thinking there may be some details available in there. I could see a version where the subject and perch are higher in the frame. I'm OK with the dof even with your concerns about it...
Thanks everyone. Here's a repost with an attempt to tweak a little something out of the highlights and shadows, and just a hint of additional selective USM on the head and nape. I've left the comp alone. If my backyard birds cooperate, you'll probably be seeing more of this perch.
