    Clyde,

The first thing that comes to mind is the shadow on the face, the dark eye and tight left side. Generally speaking a well lit, clean eye makes any photo stronger and the subject placement is tight on the side as I mentioned. Given the limited FL of the lens how large was the crop; the IQ could be better, but a large crop can can make the image seem soft and grainy.

There might be an opportunity here to use flash and possibly a Better Beamer when the subject is further away. Remember you shoot the light not the subject. The background is clean and well muted and I especially like the soft clouds. The opportunity here is the angle of the light the shadows are facing the lens; the limited amount of light on the subject could be helped with flash. Birds in flight are challenging and you are on the right track here - keep em coming.

Clyde....You captured a sharp image of the gull with good wing position. As mentioned you need to lighten up the face. You can do this with the dodge tool in PS or the shadow /highlight menu. You might try some more fill!

Thank You Jeff , I have made more adjustments to the photo ,but will wait the suggested 48 hrs. to post it .
As far as the crop size ,The photo above is around 70% remaining and the second one I opened up to around 80 % of the original . I think it may be a bit soft due to the quality of the lens ,and I should have stopped down the aperture a bit .....up the ISO -up the f/stop . I now have a lp160 flash and am finding it fun to use on wildlife .
also , I keep thousands of "Sayings " floating around in my head .......now 1001 ! lol I shoot the light ! not the subject !

I like the sharpness of your photo, the wing position and the bird looking at you. The background is also very nice. I like the repost although it might be a tad too light now. But definite improvement over the darker version.

Thank You Karen , Your observation is exactly why we need to have work critiqued . After looking at the same image for a good amount of time , I have to walk away for a few of days to get a fresh prospective . When i return to look at the same photo ,I can see more clearly . I Agree the photo now has lost some strength . Too Bright .
