    Default Shore Stalker Stare

I always wait at least a week or so after a photography trip before I start really diving into the editing. For some reason images start popping out from the masses when you come back to them after a few days with fresh eyes.

Here is one of many Ursus americanus vancouveri images that I now have to work through This guy was shifting rocks and took a minute to check out what was happening around him.

Techs Canon 1D Mark IV with 400mm F5.6 rested on beanbag on rocking boat @ F5.6, 1/1000, ISO3200. The 400mm F5.6 does not have IS so I had to go for a high shutter speed to freeze the action. The bears move pretty quickly along the shoreline so if the bear isn't moving, its paws or ears or nose are.

Website version with original image colour cast. The bears are bluer than their mainland cousins: http://jamiedouglasphotography.com/p...5abe#h457e5abe

Pretty impressed with the 1D4 noise performance compared to the 7D and the conditions I faced in Tofino are pretty much why I decided it was time to buy one a few months ago. I love my 7D but it would not have delivered in these conditions. Editing black bears shot at a high ISO is never going to be an easy task

What is the best way to reduce the colour noise in the fur around the legs?

Let me know what you think.

    Jamie

    Very nice for 3200.
I don't see the noise at all.
The photo looks alive and vibrant to me.
    Well done.

    Hi Jamie,
you handled the noise issues at ISO 3200 quite well, for me there is no noise visible.Myself i find more difficult to get rid of luminance noise.

Different options for getting rid of color noise.Neat IMage, ACR,Noiseware PRO and inside Photoshop different blur filters applied to a RGB layer set to color mode .

The image is nice with the head turn facing you, is the bear wanting to turn that stone ?
Processing looks very good in all important terms Jamie.Better than the last one, for me.

Hi Jamie, what with Rachels and now this, both of you are providing 'food for thought' for future trips, but I guess I cannot squeeze a trip in with Mike in Feb/March sadly, so looks like just the Owls...

Yep I would totally agree, the new acquisition of the MKIV and honing your PP skills are really paying off.

Perhaps moving the whole crop a bit more to the left and if the bear was a little smaller in frame could be better, but I feel you have pushed yourself beyond your normal comfort zone and have achieve a very good image overall and therefore well done.

Hi Jamie - at this size the noise isn't apparent so sorry, can't help you there. I prefer the color of this one to the last. I like the pose with the bear looking up at you. Nicely done and I think the new gear is paying off.

    TFS,
    Rachel

    Hi Jamie,

Pretty much agree with all the above - especially that you have done well in overcoming the issues of such high ISO. My first take on the shot was pretty much with Steve - some more room for the bear, particularly on the left side and a little above, too.

    Well done!

Thanks folks, I am just on the train to work so thought I'd pop by to comment.

I pondered the crop for a while because I dont have any more room to the right but I do have space on the left, above and a little below. They need to invent boats that don't rock LOL.

As for the noise, I can still see faint traces but I guess that's because I know it was there. There was colour noise in the fur and traces of CA, so what I did was run lens and colour correction in ACR and then ran a 6, 60% NR as a layer and removed some of the colour noise on the fur. Very little to no NR was applied to the rest of the image which makes me all that more impressed with the 1D4 performance.

if I was to go and extend the canvas area, is there a good practice to save having to rework whole image from the smart object?

    Thanks again everyone

    Jamie

Can only agree with the others here, Jamie...
Best black bear IQ I've seen from you in a long time...and that at ISO-3200! The black fur looks great. You must be stoked

Very stoked and now all I have to do is find some more like this amongst my files. I set the bar high for myself maybe too early. Cheers Morkel.

Maybe we can we can schedule a week and head to Tofino some time in the future and then head up the coast for Grizz. But for Feb we will have SEO galore. I have a sweet location.

All critique has been covered, just want to say that I love the bear's expression. Very nice.
