I love the lines created by the feathers. It reminds me of a lady concealing her face with a fan.

Very good preening activity, do like the lines as you mentioned. Good shooting angle, well exposed.
Wish I could see a bit more of the eyes. The centered position works with this pose[head right at us], but I might try a version with a sliver off the right.
I might also try a version with bit less contrast and or moving the black slider a bit back to the left.
Hi Gail, the feathers of the near wing really pop out at me - great 3D effect, as well as good DOF. Your low angle looks good, and I like the blue lines/ripples in the water, and overall well exposed. I too would liked to have seen at least one of the eyes. Comp wise, if anything, I would just take a bit off the top.
I love preening birds and sometimes think that having "eyes" should not be a necessary requirement. As in this beautiful image, to see eyes, you could not capture the stunning wing spread. I really like that bit of the bill showing below the wing. Do you have some space to add at the bottom for those "virtual legs"?
What an awesome pose. It would have been even better if the bird would have given you a look and make the eyes visible. Love the beak sticking trough the features. Iīd take some off from the top and add a little more for the bottom for the composition. Very nice.
This capture is really working for me and I don't mind one bit that I can't see the eyes. That's one of the things that makes it unique. I like the bill showing through the plumes and the lovely water and gentle ripples. Crop works for me but can't say another crop might not work a little better or just as well.
The ayes don't have it. Looks great as is. It's a very graphic image in terms of design/comp, which also happens to also have a bird in it. Very cool. (gt)
This is a great preening shot and I think the left eye is visible and it looks closed. Although I like this as is I would like to see it with Randy's adjustment suggestions, just to compare.
I think this is a really interesting photo. I kind of miss eye contact, but it lends to a mysterious quality without it.
I also think that backing off the contrast and making it a bit softer would look nice.
I have mixed feelings about the eyes but yes, the fact that I donīt see the eyes makes it special and yes, I do love the warm light. Very nice water too!
Killer preening pose, and though I would not have thought of it, your description of the lady using a fan
seems to correlate perfectly here. Eye contact is irrelevant in this image imo, but I do agree that more
space on the bottom for the virtual legs seems appropriate....the species really does have some significant
leg length that "feels" too cut off here. Regardless, it's a lovely image. Love the sky color caught in the
ripple line...
Thank you all for your helpful comments. In this repost I have reduced the blacks, added more canvas on the bottom and cropped a bit off the top and RHS. I think it looks pretty good!
