Beautiful nuthatch, pose and background, Don. It is amazing how big those feet are relative to the body! I guess they need them that size to cling onto the trees? I do think the bird might be just a little oversharpened, but see what others think. Overall a wonderful portrait; nice work.

    Don:

Lovely light, good colors. Impressive feet! Well exposed.

Sharpening looks just a bit much for my tastes, just a little crunchy looking on some of the finer feathers.

I might consider moving him a sliver more to the left in the frame.

    Cheers

    Randy

PS: Melissa and I were typing at the same time, but I see she had the same thoughts on sharpening.

    Hi Don,
I love the light and the different POV from above.
The bird looks a bit oversharpened to me.
Love the good look at the feet,
    Gail
PS. Just read Melissa and Randy's post. Sorry for the repetition but at least you know that I, too, think it is oversharpened!

Hi Don, I do like the slight angled pose, and as Im not familiar with this species, their feet do look too big for their bodies. He even managed to grip on either side of the large perch. Love the colours in the BG, and agree, its a fine line when it comes to sharpening finer plumage. Selectively sharpening those areas may work better.

Love the warm color and tone. I will have to agree that the feathers are just a bit over sharpened.

I love these little guys. I guess I'll have to make another trip out west if I want to see them again. You've captured him nicely, with great colors, pose and feet. Another vote to back off on the sharpening.

Cute bird, nice light, and good head angle. BG looks great. I'm not a huge fan of the perch...I'm OK with it's size and texture, it's just the blunt cut-off top that could be better IMO. It does show off the feet nicely though.

Teriffic shot. Very nice light, great pose, and I really like the background.
I agree that it's a bit over sharpened.

Here's a repost with zero sharpening on the bird (except a tiny bit around the eye).
Its straight from the 1DX 500-II combo. Its sharp....

The repost looks very nice Don, I like the perch, the feet and nuthatches of all varieties are about my favorite birds.

    Don:

The repost does look pretty darn sharp.Did you sharpen for web presentation, or nothing except the eye?

Only the eye and the perch(and the feet as part of that area) were sharpened. Eye only got about 20% sharpening (that's the transparency used when painting on the blocking mask on that layer).
Bird and background is not sharpened.

The 1DX and 500 II have killer sharpness.
Its even sharper than the MIV and 500II (and I haven't MA the 1DX/600II yet to check it, but Arash seems to do very well with MKIV/600II so I expect the same).

I love em both. Sweet light and perch. And BKGR. You might wish to lighten the dark tones of the face just a bit.
